About KWR

KWR is an internationally renowned research institute in the fields of water quality, the water cycle, and sustainable development. Our mission is ‘bridging science and practice.’ From our nearly entirely sustainable building, equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, our approximately 200 staff members—representing a wide range of disciplines—work on innovative projects in the Netherlands and, increasingly, both within and beyond Europe. Our shareholders are the ten Dutch drinking water utilities and the Belgian company ‘De Watergroep.’

Throughout 2025, we at KWR have been fully committed to addressing the societal challenges that lie ahead in a decisive and effective manner. Driven by a widely felt need for greater direction in our research, we have put significant effort and energy into developing our 2035 master plan: “Bringing the Values of Water to Life.” More than a third of KWR’s staff contributed directly to this process—from the initial ‘moonshots’ to the final master plan.

A top priority within our strategy is ensuring an adequate supply of high-quality, safe, and healthy water in Europe. Our focus extends beyond drinking water to encompass other water sources and components of the water supply system—such as surface water, wastewater, drought management, and water storage—all of which are of great importance to our shareholders and clients. Our researchers operate at the intersection of science, industry, and society. Their strength lies in translating scientific knowledge into practical, applicable solutions for end-users within the Dutch and international water sectors. To support this research, KWR maintains specialized laboratories and a pilot-testing facility, and we design and construct our own pilot installations. Furthermore, we develop bespoke software tailored for use within our projects.
