Janine de Wit is a researcher on the Ecohydrology team. She mainly researches climate-robust freshwater supply in rural areas. In doing so, she investigates the subsurface’s first 2 to 3 meters, also called the unsaturated zone. In 2018, she graduated from Wageningen University, where Janine followed the MSc in Earth & Environment with a combination specialization in hydrology and meteorology. She wrote her master’s thesis at the Agricultural Research Organization (Volcani Center) in Israel. She studied drip irrigation in olive trees, using soil, water, and plant interactions and the agrohydrological model SWAP. During her internship at KWR, Janine expanded her hydrological modelling experience (Hydrus) and gained experience with subirrigation. In her work, she combines this knowledge in projects such as the KLIMAP and Lumbricus programs.
Janine started a PhD track at Wageningen University and KWR in November 2020. Here she is researching how to find a better balance between water retention and discharge on the high sandy soils in the Netherlands. Specifically, she looks at how the ‘control drainage with subirrigation’ measure can contribute to this. This research is part of the KLIMAP program.
Through good cooperation with colleagues, knowledge institutes and water managers, Janine wants to do her bit for a climate-robust soil and water system.
