(Senior) Research Analyst Chemistry (32-40 hours)

Clean and safe water is a precious commodity. KWR is an internationally renowned research institute and we contribute to applied scientific research throughout the water cycle. Our mission is: ‘Bridging science and practice’. Our 200 employees work on innovative projects in the Netherlands and, increasingly, in the rest of Europe. The ten Dutch drinking water companies and the Belgian De Watergroep are our shareholders.

Our researchers work at the intersection of science, implementation practice, business, and society. Their strength lies in translating scientific knowledge into applicable practical solutions. To support its research, KWR has specialized laboratories, a test hall, a test pond, and builds its own test installations, which are often used in (on-site) practical research for our clients.

Your position

In this position at the dynamic intersection of research and practice, you will be responsible for developing, optimizing, and validating analytical methods and implementing new techniques. You will also perform specialized and complex analyses for microcontaminants such as drugs, PFAS, and medicines. The work will be carried out for research and consultancy assignments for water companies and other clients. You will mainly use the analysis techniques LC-MS, LC-HRMS, and GC-MS, including data processing software. In addition, you will also perform suspect and non-target screening. You will be in contact with our internal and external clients, discuss issues and challenges with them, and advise on the practical approach to the work in our laboratory.

Your profile

  • You have (at least) a bachelor’s degree in analytical chemistry or similar and at least 5 years of relevant work experience;
  • You have knowledge of and hands-on experience with LC-MS, LC-HRMS, and GC-MS analysis techniques;
  • You have knowledge and experience in the field of method development and optimization.
  • You have extensive experience in developing and interpreting HRMS data (e.g., suspect and non-target screening).
  • You work accurately when setting up and conducting research and recording research results.
  • You can switch quickly and easily between tasks and combine them;
  • You have good communication skills (e.g. due to contact with internal and external clients), are socially skilled, and derive energy from working with others;
  • You are driven to achieve results, are goal-oriented, and have a proactive attitude;
  • You are flexible and can deal well with changing priorities;
  • You are quality-conscious and have experience with NEN-EN-ISO/IEC 17025 or a comparable quality system;
  • You have a good command of the Dutch language; knowledge of English is an advantage.

The team

The Laboratorium voor Materialenonderzoek en Chemische Analyse (LMC) consists of 13 colleagues. LMC supports KWR researchers and the water sector in applied scientific research into the control and utilization of chemical and microbiological processes in water extraction, treatment, and distribution. This also includes the chemical and microbiological safety of the water cycle. In KWR’s state-of-the-art laboratory, LMC conducts analyses of the presence of chemical components in various matrices, including drinking water, surface water, groundwater, and wastewater. Depending on the issue at hand, both target substance-oriented analyses and screening for unknown substances can be carried out using advanced techniques and software. Together with the Microbiology Laboratory and six research teams, the Chemical Laboratory forms the Water Knowledge Group.

Our offer

We are strongly committed to personal growth and career development and offer various opportunities to this end, such as a thorough onboarding process and a range of courses and skills training. A good work-life balance is a priority for us. KWR offers excellent primary and secondary employment conditions and is affiliated with the Water Companies Collective Labor Agreement, which includes a Flexible Employment Conditions Budget of 15.49%.
