UPPWATER

Accelerating the economic growth of the Dutch water technology sector.

UPPWATER is a national, long-term innovation programme aimed at strengthening the international position and growth of the Dutch water technology sector. The programme covers the full innovation chain, from research and development to upscaling and market introduction of sustainable water technologies. Through collaboration between public and private partners, and by sharing knowledge and networks, UPPWATER contributes to solutions for sufficient and clean water for drinking water supply, nature and industry.

Within UPPWATER, TKI Water Technology and KWR are jointly responsible for Programme Line 2: Pilots & Testing. This programme line is a key element in accelerating the application of innovative water technologies by testing and validating new solutions in realistic practice environments.

Projects within Programme Line 2 are carried out by collaborative consortia of technology developers, knowledge institutes and end users. Pilot projects take place in controlled or simulated environments, such as drinking water treatment plants, industrial processes or urban infrastructure. This enables innovations to be tested under real-world conditions as a stepping stone towards wider demonstration and application. The pilots focus on five strategic areas: water treatment, alternative water sources, circularity, digitalisation and decentralised solutions.

From its role as a research institute, KWR contributes in-depth expertise in water quality, technology development and practice-oriented research. KWR supports and guides pilot projects, connects partners within consortia and helps to make promising water technologies reliable and scalable. In doing so, KWR helps to bridge the gap between innovation and practical application.
