Water Transition Platform kick-off event: Water Reuse – Balancing the System

Event details

2026 again makes it clear: the availability of freshwater for industry, agriculture and drinking water has become a strategic issue for the future of our economy and society. A systemic transformation is required in the way we manage our water supply. While many promising technical solutions for water efficiency, water reuse, and circular water management are already available, their adoption is frequently constrained by regulatory, policy, and organizational barriers.

The Water Transition Platform was established to overcome these non-technical issues and accelerate smart water (re)use. It unites relevant public and private stakeholders around shared water challenges and helps convert them into actionable opportunities for innovation. By bridging sectors and disciplines, we promote solutions that can be implemented at scale, enabling investments in water efficiency, circular water use, and long-term resilience.

Friday 13 November 2026, we kick-off the platform with a symposium and (morning) site visit. At the event you will:

  • Hear diverse perspectives from leaders in industry, agriculture, drinking water, and government
  • Visit the Avebe and NorthWater facilities to learn how collaboration can drive innovative water solutions in practice
  • Collaborate to explore and advance solution pathways for existing cases on water reuse, aquifer storage, and cross-sectorial collaborations
  • Help shape the future agenda and impact of the Water Transition Platform

About the Water Transition Platform

The Water Transition Platform is a joint initiative of ISPT (Institute for Sustainable Process Technology), the Dutch Biorefinery Cluster, KWR Water Research Institute, and STOWA. The platform builds on existing regional and sector-specific initiatives in the field of sustainable water use and provides a national connection between these initiatives.

The platform focuses on removing non-technical barriers that slow down the implementation of innovative water solutions, such as:

  • uncertainty regarding water quality standards for water reuse and managed aquifer recharge;
  • permitting procedures for the discharge of more concentrated effluent streams;
  • double taxation in water cascading systems;
  • the lack of effective collaboration models for cross-sectoral water reuse;
  • insufficient alignment between different sustainability objectives, such as water stewardship, CO reduction, energy efficiency, and nitrogen reduction.

The Water Transition Platform brings together companies, drinking water utilities, water authorities, government (incl. Provinces), and knowledge institutes to translate water-related challenges into practical and scalable solutions. Through knowledge sharing, value chain collaboration, and the development of concrete action perspectives, the platform aims to accelerate the transition towards a resilient and circular water system.

One of the platform’s initiatives is the TKI Agri & Food public-private partnership (PPS) project “Critical Success Factors for Water (Re)Use.” The objective of this project is to identify, based on successful practical examples, which solutions are effective in overcoming non-technical barriers that hinder the implementation of innovative water solutions. By making this knowledge widely available and translating it into practical applications for other contexts, successful approaches can be scaled up more rapidly, thereby accelerating the water transition.

The platform will come together quarterly and is open to organizations that wish to actively contribute to the development, prioritization, and scaling up of innovative solutions for sustainable water management.
