Klaasjan J. Raat is a Senior scientific researcher and Project manager in the Geohydrology team. He is an expert in water resources management, water reuse, and freshwater supply in coastal areas. At KWR, he initiates and coordinates R&D projects within these fields, with the common goal to come to practical solutions for the problems faced by water end-users.
Klaasjan co-leads the freshwater resources management theme within the Water in the Circular Economy (WiCE) research program, and the Watershare Community of Practice on Subsurface Water Solutions. He is one of the initiators the Horizon 2020 SUBSOL project and the Dutch COASTAR initiative, and is co-founder of the Allied Waters SALutions Collab. These initiatives build upon 65 years of subsurface water storage and treatment experience that has successfully secured water supply in Dutch urban coastal regions, adding new features to make these concepts applicable in saline (groundwater) environments at various scales. SUBSOL, COASTAR and SALutions are all dedicated to implementing these subsurface water solutions, safeguarding water supply for industry, cities, drinking water supply and agriculture, both in the Netherlands and abroad.
