Finding appropriate water management practices to navigate our changing environment is a shared responsibility

BTO Watershare Webinar series Sharing International Experiences on Water Supply

The environment we live in is fast-changing. Ongoing climate change, growing global populations and the intensification of economic activities increase the demand for global water supply. To safeguard water supply now and in the future, we have to change course. New insights, innovations and valorisation of appropriate solutions are needed to put ourselves on track to manage our water resources in this changing environment.

Collaborative action coupled with inter- and cross-disciplinary water management is required to stimulate innovation and deliver new and exciting technologies and integrated solutions. Through this action across the water value chain, we can improve processes, strategies, and water management practices.

Sustainable water management practice

Finding appropriate water management practices to address the pressures is a shared responsibility. Research and innovation is often scattered among global researchers, utilities, and solution providers. We can learn a lot from one another. Therefore, it is relevant to centralise knowledge, expertise and experiences on applied research, novel business models and know-how. At a minimum, we should ensure that this knowledge is accessible. By doing so, a better informed and sustainable water management practice now and in the future will be reached.

To this purpose, KWR’s Joint Research Programme (BTO) and Watershare have launched a webinar series on ‘Sharing International Experiences on Water Supply’.

Why a webinar series?

BTO and Watershare are organising a webinar series given the abundance of knowledge and expertise among our partners and networks. The intention is to stimulate knowledge exchange for collaborative learning around topics of importance for water service providers. These include topics that enable water service providers to supply sufficient and safe water. Sufficient and safe water means that water supply is sustainable and future-proof, with acceptable economic (business), social and environmental outcomes.

Why are BTO and Watershare best positioned to organise this webinar series?

BTO is a joint research programme between KWR and water service providers in the Netherlands and Flanders. Watershare is an international water sector network with the vision to share knowledge, expertise, and resources between global researchers, utilities, and solution providers to collaborate, implement innovations for a resilient water future and contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6). Through this collaboration, sharing valuable knowledge and innovations relevant to economic, social and environmental considerations for water service providers is made possible.

BTO gives us a good sense of the questions water service providers face. These questions are translated into the focus of the webinars series. Through Watershare, a broader international network is reached, further enrichening the discussion on water supply ecosystems.

What opportunities does the webinar series bring?

The webinar series is the opportunity to engage with other water sector professionals. It is the opportunity to share and contribute with questions, knowledge and experiences. With this collaborative learning, we increase the collective share of the pie in terms of developing new and sustainable water service ecosystems.

Water service providers will need to keep up with the fast-changing environment. The webinar series ‘Sharing International Experiences on Water Supply’ contributes by responding to the questions of water service providers through the exchange and valorisation of relevant knowledge. Sharing knowledge and experience stimulates a change from the old way of doing, to new and sustainable ways of navigating our changing environment. As such, the webinar series contributes to improving processes, strategies and policies for appropriate water management practices for healthy societies and the environment.
