Our top 10 publications in 2024

The results of KWR’s scientific research are published in publications and articles in a large number of journals and professional magazines. With our publications, we have been building a sound scientific knowledge base for the water sector for fifty years. We believe it is important for our publications to contribute to the establishment of resilient water systems and a sustainable society. For the 2024 Annual Review, we drew up a list of the most-cited publications that were published in 2024.

Peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals are essential for KWR as a research institute. The scientific review of our research strengthens the quality, independence and impact of our work. It also underlines our scientific stature, which is a prerequisite for being nationally and internationally recognised as a leading institute and to be successful in national and European research programmes. KWR also conducts research in international projects. We therefore also publish regularly with researchers from foreign institutes.

Willem Koerselmanprijs

Every year, we award the Willem Koerselman Prize to the KWR researcher(s) whose peer-reviewed article has been cited most in the previous year. In June 2024, that was ‘The challenge of unprecedented floods and droughts in risk management’, the paper from hydrologist Marjolein van Huijgevoort et al. that appeared online in Nature on 3 August 2022. Along with ninety other authors, she collaborated on a wide-ranging study of the impact of risk management for floods and droughts. The study led the field in 2023 with 72 citations.
