Dr. Niels Hartog’s research focuses on the sustainable use and improvement of the quality of groundwater and the use of the subsurface as a sustainable source and storage of water and thermal energy. The reactive transport of solutes through the subsurface, the distribution and effects of heat and multi-phase phenomena in groundwater are common themes in his research. Examples of sustainable subsurface water technologies that he is working on are: managed aquifer recharge (MAR), aquifer storage and recovery (ASR), geothermal heat production, aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES), subsurface iron removal (SIR) and subsurface water treatment. As Prinicipal Scientist, he represents the Geohydrology team at KWR’s scienctific council.
