Fabi van Berkel is a Public Design, Value and Decision Making researcher in the Resilience, Management & Governance team. At KWR, she leads design-oriented research in the social environment and area-oriented processes, and she contributes to studies focused on applying innovations in transitions. The core of her work is about making values and trade-offs in sustainability and transition issues explicit. She provides social context to technological innovations or development strategies, identifies relevant actors and makes the potential impact of a decision or implementation tangible. With an eye on system innovation and collective solutions, she explores ‑ together with stakeholders ‑ novel relations and interdependencies in collaborations by questioning the distribution of roles, responsibilities and resources.

Fabi holds a bachelor’s degree in Planning and Social Geography and double master’s degrees in European Planning and Environmental Social Sciences. Her scientific interests lie in value-based decision-making, institutions, (social) system dynamics, and innovation. She is driven by generating transformative knowledge and developing creative and intuitive tools that professionals can use to achieve results in practice.
