Fabi van Berkel is water governance researcher in the Resilience Management & Governance Team. Fabi is fascinated by the questions: How to organize resilient and sustainable cities & regions? How to (re)design our (political, social and economic) systems so that humans and nature can thrive. She is interested in aspects of institutions, (political) economy, system dynamics, methods and decision-making related to water, sustainable and environmental challenges. At KWR Fabi works on research projects related to sustainable urban development projects, circular economy, future exploration and strategy development. Her main contributions are based in: economic governance arrangements, Multiple Value Creation, stakeholder processes (roles, responsibilities & collaboration), as well as citizen’s-participation. Fabi has a double master’s degree in urban & regional planning and social and political sciences of the environment. She has broad experience working in both practice and science, but is mostly passionate about transformative knowledge and developing tools that can direct/support change to sustainable futures. Fabi has worked on various European research projects, researching citizen’s participation, policy-making, multiple value creation and the circular economy. In the R-LINK project (NWO-SURF), she studied the legitimacy of citizen participation in urban (green) developments and co-developed ‘the Stakeholder Canvas’ – a tool that supports decision-making in area-based development processes. At KWR she aims to develop tools that will integrate water & socio-economic values in decision-making processes and therewith broaden contemporary evaluation methods that are used in urban development processes.
