At KWR, Milou Dingemans is Chief Science Officer and Principal Scientist for the Knowledge Domain Chemical Water Quality, which addresses the chemical, environmental, and toxicological factors that determine safe water use, through integrated monitoring, assessment, and protection strategies.

Milou has more than 20 years of experience in research on the health effects of chemical exposures. Her study in Biology with a specialisation in Toxicology and Environmental Health was followed by doctoral research on effects of substances on the nervous system, and several postdoctoral research projects in human toxicology.

Her work focuses on chemical risk assessment for water systems and drinking water, including the evaluation of environmental exposures and potential health risks of emerging and existing contaminants. This includes the development, evaluation and implementation of innovative testing strategies and risk assessment methodologies related to chemical water quality. Milou is also a guest researcher at the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences at Utrecht University, on the subject of Water Quality and Health.

Milou is co-lead of KWR’s WHO Collaborative Centre for Water Quality and Health, a member of WHO’s expert groups on chemical aspects of water quality, and chair of KWR’s Scientific Council. She serves on several advisory committees for academic and public-sector research. In addition, she is a member of the Supervisory Board of the Dutch Postgraduate Education in Toxicology. She is actively involved in international scientific collaboration through the Global Water Research Coalition and is a member of the International Water Association, the Society of Toxicology, the Royal Dutch Water Network, and the Dutch Society of Toxicology.
