LLM Developer Intern: Building AI-Driven Knowledge Systems for Water Utilities

Are you an inquisitive and enthusiastic student with an affinity for AI and Large Language Models? And are you looking for an instructive internship from September 2025 at a professional organization working on sustainable development? Then read on!

What do we ask of you?

We are looking for an MSc in Hydroinformatics, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or related field. We expect you to be familiar with (or be able to quickly learn about):

  • Large Language Models and AI agents;
  • Python;
  • Water systems and environmental systems;
  • LangGraph or Dify is a plus.

Your tasks will involve:

  • Literature and data selection for one or more application domains;
  • Developing and fine-tuning domain-specific LLM agents;
  • Integrating these agents into a working prototype chatbot;
  • Testing the tool with real users from water utilities;
  • Documenting lessons and recommendations for long-term use.

You will collaborate directly with researchers at KWR Water Research Institute and receive close guidance on the technical and methodological aspects of the project.

We only accept interns who have, or can purchase, a valid work permit during the intern period.

What do we offer you?

  • An instructive internship starting September 2025 (starting date in consultation) for 6 months for 32 – 40 hours a week;
  • A chance to contribute to cutting-edge AI research with real impact in the water sector;
  • A good balance between guidance and working independently;
  • A hybrid form of work, in which you work both at home and in the office;
  • An internship allowance and laptop during your internship.

About KWR

KWR is a research institute with an international reputation in the field of water quality, water technology, water systems, sustainability and transitions. ‘Bridging science to practice’ is our mission. At our almost entirely sustainable building with specialized research laboratories, our workforce of approximately 200 people in two research groups engages on innovative projects located in the Netherlands and, increasingly, elsewhere inside and outside Europe. Our shareholders are the ten Dutch water companies and the Belgian water company De Watergroep.

Our researchers work at the interface of science, business and society. Their strength lies in their translation of scientific knowledge into applicable, practical solutions for clients in the Dutch and international water sector. To support our research, KWR has specialized laboratories and a testing hall, and we also build our own test arrays. In addition, company-specific software is developed for use on projects.

About the team

You will work within the Hydroinformatics team. The Hydroinformatics (HI) team’s goal is to support the water sector by integrating digital technologies and solutions into water management, aiming for sustainability and preparedness for future challenges. This involves developing and implementing innovative digital science and technology, such as horizon scanning, to enhance the design, management, and performance of water systems in the face of uncertainties like climate change, urbanization, and population growth.

Are you interested in a broad and challenging internship within a dynamic organization? Send your motivation letter and CV before the 20th of August to vacancy@kwrwater.nl.
