Gilian Schout strives in his research in the Hydrogeology team to find sustainable solutions in geohydrochemically demanding projects. He is experienced in environmental geochemistry, which includes the use of isotope research and analysis of the composition of diluted gases in groundwater. He is also engaged in projects focused on predicting the composition of infiltrated and abstracted groundwater, so that techniques such as subsurface water storage and subsurface water treatment can be optimised. His geohydrochemical knowledge was reinforced during his doctoral work on the detection and quantification of risks to groundwater quality presented by oil and gas extraction. Besides water-quality related research, Gilian is also an expert in modelling complex hydrogeological questions, such as density-driven flows in high-temperature storage (HTO) and multiphase flows during gas leakages. Before embarking on his PhD, Gilian built up a few years’ experience with more applied hydrogeological work in the Middle-East, where he was given a variety of assignments, such as geophysical measurements, the design and drilling of groundwater wells, groundwater modelling and water-quality monitoring.
