Webinar AquaConnect

Event details

How will the new AquaConnect programme (2021-2026) work on improving the availability of freshwater? A webinar about AquaConnect and the challenges of treating and reusing wastewater and brackish groundwater will be held on Thursday, 20 May 2021, at 16:00-17:15.

AquaConnect – Water availability connects the water sector

Thursday, 20 May 2021 | 16:00-17:15 | online | register

The AquaConnect research programme is directed at the reuse of wastewater and brackish groundwater, with the aim of building a greater supply of water for use during periods of drought in the Netherlands. In this webinar we will present the AquaConnect programme and have a panel discussion with AquaConnect consortia about their contributions to the project.

Having a sufficient supply of freshwater available in the future for all areas in the Netherlands will require additional measures and new technologies. The temporary storage of precipitation surpluses in the subsurface, combined with the use of new water sources, for example, through the treatment of desalinated brackish groundwater and highly treated wastewater, will make it possible for the Netherlands to further improve its capacity to meet the demand for freshwater in the future. Preserving the robustness of the surface water and groundwater system, both as clean freshwater reserves and as a barrier against salinisation, is an important element.

The AquaConnect programme (2021-2026) is part of the NWO-TTW Perspective programme, which aims to create connections in the water sector to improve the availability of freshwater. This brings with it several new challenges:

  • How do you connect different water sectors?
  • Which (new) technologies are needed?
  • What are the legal and administrative factors?
  • And how do you get new technologies and new water loops implemented?

Speakers: Huub Rijnaarts (Wageningen University and Research), Annemarie Kramer (Rijn&Ijssel Water Authority), Ruud Bartholomeus (KWR), Ferdinand Kiestra (Aa&Maas Water Authority), Herman Gilissen (Utrecht University), Jasper Verberk (Brabant Water) and Tuur van den Eijnde (Nijhuis Industries).

Chair: Arjen van Nieuwenhuizen (Witteveen+Bos, AMS Institute) together with Nora Sutton (Wageningen University and Research).
