Collective sustainable heating systems are technically feasible and socially acceptable

Results of WarmingUP

The three-year WarmingUP innovation programme demonstrates that collective sustainable heat systems are technically feasible and socially acceptable. Heating systems without natural gas require new infrastructure and regulations. The collaboration with nearly sixty parties from the entire heat chain delivered new knowledge, tools and techniques for the heating systems of the future in the Netherlands.

Results of the WarmingUP innovation programme

The programme covered a wide range of applications, from aquathermal, geothermal, and aquifer thermal energy to solar thermal or residual heat from sources such as data centres. In addition to more intelligent ways to design, construct or expand heat networks, the programme also developed new types of alliances and scaling-up strategies.

Collaboration of sixty companies, governments and research organisations

WarmingUP was possible thanks to contributions from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), as well as some sixty companies, governments and research organisations (including KWR) that contributed financially or provided specific expertise or materials for knowledge development. WarmingUP’s accumulated knowledge is moving on to the next phase, where the focus will be on further development, validation and making tools more user-friendly. For example in the NieuweWarmteNu! (NewHeatNow!) Growth Fund Programme and some projects in the Mission-Driven Research, Development and Innovation (MOOI) arrangement. WarmingUP innovations are finding their way there.
