Van Leerdam and De Voogt in special publication American Chemical Society

An article by KWR researchers Ton van Leerdam and Pim de Voogt, together with 19 other trend-setting pieces, has been included in a special publication of the American Chemical Society (ACS) dedicated to ‘Water Analysis for Emerging Chemical Contaminants‘. This thematic publication – a so-called ‘virtual special issue’ – on analytical chemistry, appeared on 20 January.

The article is the product of a joint effort with the University of Amsterdam, Rijkswaterstaat and Wageningen University. It describes the search for the identity of several previously unknown substances that had been observed in the water of the river Meuse.

New compounds

The unknown substances were identified using accurate high-resolution mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Five of the seven compounds do not yet appear in the CAS registry (a database of more than 100 million organic and inorganic substances) and probably originate in the industrial production of resins. Nothing is known about their possible harmfulness to humans and the environmental, but the expectation is that they are difficult to remove in drinking water production.

American Chemical Society

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is the professional association of chemists in the United States, and provides support to scientific research and education in the field of chemistry. Founded in 1876 at New York University, ACS currently has more than 158,000 members from all fields of chemistry, chemical technology and related professions. It is the world’s largest scientific society and a leading source of authoritative scientific information. ACS Publications produces almost 50 journals for the world’s largest and most influential scientific organisations. Among the ways it provides the scientific community with high-quality research is the collection of the most-cited, peer-reviewed articles from a broad range of scientific disciplines in so-called ‘virtual special issues’.
