Herbert ter Maat is a hydroinformatics researcher who strongly focuses on the spatial component. He studied Soil, Water & Atmosphere at Wageningen University. At the same university, he completed his PhD research on the effect of the Earth’s surface on regional weather. He used various spatial analysis methods and applications with a strong GIS component during his research. Herbert gained extensive experience using GIS and geo-information as an Advisor Information Management GIS at the municipality of Enschede. There, he ensured a clear profile of GIS within the organisation by implementing various GIS products. After his period at the municipality, he worked as a researcher Smart Cities at Saxion University of Applied Sciences. Here, among other things, he contributed to developing a Digital Twin for the De Kien city campus in Deventer.
The influence of maps and derived products such as dashboards, storymaps and Digital Twins has taken off in recent years. Within KWR, Herbert will actively engage in all developments where his knowledge of geo-information, GIS and climate is wanted and needed. Spatial and digital developments that can help the water sector are naturally part of this (such as Digital Twin, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning). For this, it is good to gain a deeper understanding of the drivers for and results of digital water in the water sector and properly evaluate digital water’s costs and benefits.
