A wonderful week of late summer sunshine in early autumn, featuring three GRROW activities. In early October, GRROW researchers and participants came together for a workshop, a Future Dinner and the KNW Congress. In this blog, we share the key insights from this inspiring week!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

GRROW stands for Generational and Radical Rethinking of the Water Sector. In this project, young researchers and water professionals work closely together to question and redesign (parts of) the water sector. The third GRROW cycle began in spring 2026. New this year is the participation of young professionals not only from drinking water utilities, but also from water authorities and other organisations across the public water sector. A total of 95 young professionals signed up!<\/p>\n

The GRROW project consists of four stages: i) identifying, ii) reconsidering, iii) redesigning and iv) implementing. The identification stage took place over the summer through an intergenerational dialogue.<\/p>\n

Reconsidering workshop: The values of water<\/h2>\n

On Tuesday 6 October, an enthusiastic group of GRROW participants gathered at the Marineterrein in Amsterdam for the second stage: reconsidering. This GRROW cycle focuses on collaboration within the water sector. The first stage (identifying) revealed that collaboration can sometimes be challenging, but that a shared understanding of the values of water brings the sector together. These values of water were precisely what we explored during the reconsidering workshop!<\/p>\n

After sharing experiences from the intergenerational dialogue, guest speaker Benjamin van Schothorst gave a presentation based on his essay \u2018Bekentenis van een watermens\u2019 (\u2018Confessions of a Water Person\u2019), for which he received the Joost Zwagerman Essay Prize in 2025. It was an inspiring presentation in which he described how the meaning of water has changed for him, from his childhood to his current professional life. Sometimes, it is worth asking yourself: \u2018Why am I doing what I am doing?\u2019<\/p>\n

The presentation provided plenty of inspiration for participants to explore their own personal and professional values associated with water! Here, values were understood as normative perspectives through which places or activities can be viewed. In other words, a river can provide drinking water, serve as a habitat for species and form part of a local identity. During the workshop, participants discussed how values emerge and which choices they influence.<\/p>\n

By the end of the workshop, each group had created a persona, a \u2018water professional of the future\u2019, representing a particular value of water. For example, there was \u2018Metti\u2019, who focuses entirely on AI and makes statements such as \u2018AI told me I should drink bottled water\u2019, as well as \u2018Ari\u00ebl\u2019, who believes in caring for nature and adapting to its rhythms. This sparked a discussion about whether a shift from linear challenges towards more socially adaptive issues might require different types of personalities within organisations than those currently represented.<\/p>\n

It was an inspiring morning, full of enthusiasm! The values of water discussed during the workshop, and their significance, will serve as design principles for the next GRROW stage: redesigning.<\/p>\n

Future Dinner: collaboration in the water sector<\/h2>\n

On Thursday 8 October, we travelled to Amersfoort Zoo for the KNW Future Dinner for the Water Sector. An enthusiastic group gathered for a delicious three-course dinner organised by jongKNW. GRROW provided the conversation topics for the evening. Once again, collaboration within the water sector was the central theme.<\/p>\n

During the first course, participants explored analogies for the water sector. This led to some engaging conversations. For example, the water sector was compared to a carnival parade, in which different companies each have their own float. These are impressive floats with their own identities, but together they form a procession with a shared purpose. Nevertheless, there is still (too) little collaboration.<\/p>\n

During the second course, we discussed collaboration within the water sector. One analogy that emerged was that of a strong relay team. The water sector consists of many different components, from source to tap, but ultimately, groundwater or surface water is transformed into drinking-quality water flowing from our taps.<\/p>\n

Over dessert, participants explored further metaphors. The state of the water sector was compared to a cat that always lands on its feet. Although many challenges remain, it is important to stay positive and keep striving to land safely on our feet. Another metaphor described the water sector as an orchestra with multiple conductors. The sector wants to move forward, but sometimes has to respond to several different directions, either simultaneously or in quick succession.<\/p>\n

Finally, experienced professionals shared some general advice. They encouraged their peers to take young professionals along for the ride. When opportunities arise, give young professionals the chance to deliver a presentation or have a conversation over coffee. Young professionals, in turn, were encouraged to continue thinking big and pursuing their dreams. It was a valuable and inspiring evening!<\/p>\n

KNW Autumn Congress: Ready for the future? Resilient and robust in water<\/h2>\n

On Friday 9 October, we attended the KNW Annual Congress 2026: Ready for the Future? Resilient and Robust in Water. In the afternoon, we hosted the workshop GRROW: Who is the Water Professional of the Future? \u2013 The Values of Water. Together with a group of 14 participants, including both young and experienced professionals, we engaged in dialogue. What made this workshop unique was that the participants were enthusiastic congress attendees who were not yet involved in the GRROW project.<\/p>\n

Once again, we explored the values of water. It was inspiring to see how much a different way of thinking can bring to the surface. As one participant put it: \u2018When we start from shared values, we quickly find common ground. Perhaps we should sometimes begin our conversations with values rather than our own roles or positions.\u2019<\/p>\n

This also echoes the thinking of Alexander von Humboldt, one of the founders of ecology and physical geography, who once said: \u2018To understand nature, we must not only measure it, but also experience it.\u2019<\/p>\n
