The main reason I attended the IWA World Water Congress in Glasgow was the workshop on antibiotic resistance: Antibiotic Resistance: The Role of Water in a One Health Context. I organised this workshop together with GWRC<\/a> partners. As there was room for only two workshops under the theme of Drinking Water & Potable Reuse in the packed congress programme, I was particularly pleased that we had the opportunity to bring antibiotic resistance to the attention of the international drinking water sector.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ahead of the congress, I had already explained why it is important to put antimicrobial resistance on the water sector’s agenda<\/a>. In Glasgow, we were able to explore this further together with international experts and participants<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Preparing the workshop was a challenge in itself, as my co-organisers were based in Australia and the United States, while the invited experts were also spread across three very different time zones. This made coordinating preparations difficult, but we managed through several separate meetings. It was wonderful to finally meet everyone in person during the first few days of the congress. The KWR & Friends stand proved to be an excellent meeting point, where we were also able to make the final adjustments and put the finishing touches to the workshop.<\/span><\/p>\n

Antibiotic resistance calls for a One Health approach<\/h2>\n

The aim of the AMR workshop was to inform participants about developments concerning the presence of antibiotic resistance in water systems. AMR is no longer an issue confined to hospitals or livestock farming. Resistant microorganisms can enter water systems through wastewater, among other routes. Water connects human and animal health with the wider environment, which is precisely what the One Health approach is about.<\/p>\n

During the workshop, experts explained how antibiotic resistance in water systems is developing and how its presence can be measured and monitored. They also presented the latest developments in approaches to assessing health risks and explored how water treatment technologies can help reduce these risks.<\/p>\n

From sharing knowledge to finding solutions together<\/h2>\n

In addition to sharing knowledge, we wanted to understand how much attention antibiotic resistance receives within the drinking water sector worldwide. We also wanted to explore which aspects cause the greatest concern and gather ideas about the most important steps that need to be taken.<\/p>\n

We therefore designed the second half of the workshop to be interactive, allowing plenty of time for discussion between participants in a roundtable format.<\/p>\n

Despite being scheduled on the final day of the congress, the workshop attracted a full room. I was genuinely moved by the energy and passion throughout the session. Lively discussions took place at all seven tables, continuing well into the lunch break after the workshop had ended.<\/p>\n

During the feedback session, three key points emerged with a strong degree of consensus:<\/p>\n

1. Monitoring and standardisation: We are well equipped to monitor the presence and development of antibiotic resistance in water systems, but there is a need for greater harmonisation of measurement methods.<\/p>\n

2. Collaboration is essential: Cooperation is needed between sectors such as healthcare, agriculture and water, as well as between countries and regions, and among researchers, industry and policymakers. This also highlighted a third important point.<\/p>\n

3. Common indicators and risk-based standards: There is a need for universally applicable indicator parameters and a better understanding of risks, providing a basis for establishing acceptable threshold values. This would help us monitor the further spread of antibiotic resistance in environmental systems and take targeted action if resistance levels continue to increase.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Building on research and collaboration<\/h2>\n

These findings align closely with the work already being carried out by Dutch and Flemish drinking water utilities on antibiotic resistance. Together with KWR, these utilities are monitoring the presence of key antibiotic-resistant organisms in drinking water sources, including groundwater, dune infiltration water and surface water, over an extended period. Research is also being conducted into ways of comparing potential risks originating from different sectors.<\/p>\n

One clear outcome of the workshop was the recognition that we need to take this work to an international level.<\/p>\n

Together with my fellow workshop organisers, we have developed a plan to publish the outcomes in a white paper. All workshop participants are welcome to contribute. We hope this will provide an initial step towards developing practical guidance for policymakers to establish guidelines on antibiotic resistance in water systems.<\/p>\n
