At this<\/span> year’s<\/span> IWA World Water <\/span>Congress<\/span> & <\/span>Exhibition<\/span> in Glasgow, KWR <\/span>brought<\/span> together<\/span> 20 Young Water Professionals (<\/span>YWPs<\/span>) <\/span>from<\/span> across<\/span> the<\/span> Dutch <\/span>and<\/span> Flemish <\/span>drinking<\/span> water <\/span>utilities<\/span>, water boards <\/span>and<\/span> partner <\/span>organisations<\/span>. <\/span>While<\/span> attending<\/span> one<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> world’s<\/span> largest<\/span> water sector<\/span> events is <\/span>already<\/span> a <\/span>valuable<\/span> experience, we <\/span>wanted<\/span> to<\/span> make <\/span>sure<\/span> the<\/span> week was <\/span>also<\/span> an<\/span> opportunity <\/span>to<\/span> connect<\/span>, <\/span>learn<\/span> and<\/span> reflect<\/span> together<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

To support this, Willemijn Bouland-Oosterwijk, Division Manager Strategy and Programming at Dunea, and Marielle van der Zouwen, CEO of KWR, designed a shared assignment to support and guide the group throughout the conference week.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before travelling to Glasgow, the young professionals met at KWR for a joint kick-off. During the congress, they started each day together at the KWR stand, sharing observations, discussing insights, and helping one another navigate the extensive programme. These daily moments created space for reflection, peer learning and connection across utility companies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>assignment<\/span> challenged<\/span> participants<\/span> to<\/span> explore<\/span> a topic <\/span>from<\/span> the<\/span> Dutch <\/span>drinking<\/span> water sector<\/span> vision<\/span> that<\/span> resonated<\/span> with<\/span> their<\/span> work<\/span> and<\/span> interests<\/span>. <\/span>Throughout<\/span> the<\/span> week, <\/span>they<\/span> were<\/span> asked<\/span> to<\/span> identify<\/span> how<\/span> utilities<\/span> and<\/span> organisations<\/span> around<\/span> the<\/span> world<\/span> are <\/span>addressing<\/span> similar<\/span> challenges<\/span>, <\/span>which<\/span> innovations<\/span> and<\/span> research <\/span>developments<\/span> stood<\/span> out, <\/span>who<\/span> we <\/span>can<\/span> learn<\/span> from<\/span>, <\/span>and<\/span> what<\/span> lessons<\/span> could<\/span> be<\/span> brought<\/span> back <\/span>to<\/span> the<\/span> Dutch <\/span>water sector<\/span>. The <\/span>YWPs<\/span> then<\/span> prepared<\/span> a <\/span>presentation<\/span> which<\/span> was shared at <\/span>the<\/span> KWR <\/span>booth<\/span> on <\/span>the<\/span> last <\/span>day<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> IWA <\/span>Congress<\/span>, presenting <\/span>their<\/span> insights<\/span> from<\/span> the<\/span> week in a <\/span>fun<\/span> and<\/span> engaging<\/span> way.<\/span><\/p>\n

New <\/span>perspectives<\/span> and<\/span> challenges<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The <\/span>assignment<\/span> offered<\/span> participants<\/span> an<\/span> opportunity <\/span>to<\/span> explore<\/span> their<\/span> own<\/span> areas<\/span> of interest <\/span>while<\/span> discovering new <\/span>connections<\/span> and<\/span> challenges<\/span>. For Cees Bregman (WMD), <\/span>the<\/span> congress<\/span> highlighted<\/span> the<\/span> potential<\/span> of data-<\/span>driven<\/span> asset management <\/span>to<\/span> contribute<\/span> to<\/span> sustainability<\/span> and<\/span> address<\/span> the<\/span> loss<\/span> of <\/span>knowledge<\/span> within<\/span> the<\/span> sector:<\/span><\/p>\n

“I <\/span>came<\/span> to<\/span> IWA <\/span>to<\/span> focus on <\/span>two<\/span> different topics: data-<\/span>driven<\/span> decision<\/span> making <\/span>and<\/span> sustainability<\/span>, <\/span>and<\/span> I <\/span>guess<\/span> I <\/span>formed<\/span> a new <\/span>perspective<\/span> that’s<\/span> somewhere<\/span> in <\/span>between<\/span> both<\/span> of <\/span>them<\/span>. I mainly<\/span> found that<\/span> there’s<\/span> still<\/span> so<\/span> much<\/span> to<\/span> gain<\/span> in data-driven<\/span> asset management, where<\/span> now<\/span>, a lot of decision<\/span> are still<\/span> based<\/span> on gut feelings<\/span>. Using a more data-driven<\/span> approach (using<\/span> data we mostly<\/span> already<\/span> have available<\/span>) to<\/span> use<\/span>, maintain<\/span> and<\/span> invest<\/span> in our<\/span> assets could<\/span> help our<\/span> company (companies) reduce<\/span> the<\/span> use<\/span> of energy, the<\/span> need<\/span> for<\/span> maintenance and<\/span> the<\/span> rate<\/span> of replacement<\/span> of our<\/span> assets. This<\/span> on it’s<\/span> own<\/span> is a different aspect of being<\/span> a more sustainable<\/span> company that<\/span> I hadn’t<\/span> thought<\/span> of before<\/span>. It even plays<\/span> into<\/span> the<\/span> upcoming<\/span> challenge<\/span> regarding<\/span> the<\/span> loss<\/span> of human capital<\/span> we’re<\/span> facing<\/span> as a sector with<\/span> the<\/span> approaching<\/span> retirement<\/span> of a lot of knowledgeable<\/span> colleagues<\/span>. Basing<\/span> our<\/span> future decisions<\/span> on data-driven<\/span> processes<\/span> rather<\/span> than<\/span> sheer<\/span> experience of the<\/span> colleagues<\/span> who<\/span> have been with<\/span> utility<\/span> companies for<\/span> a long time could<\/span> really<\/span> help us<\/span> fill<\/span> in the<\/span> gap that’s<\/span> left<\/span> behind<\/span> when<\/span> these colleagues<\/span> leave<\/span> our<\/span> companies (minimizing<\/span> this<\/span> gap being<\/span> a large challenge<\/span> on its<\/span> own<\/span>).”<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Fenna Philipse (Waternet) <\/span>focused<\/span> on reverse <\/span>osmosis<\/span> (RO) <\/span>concentrate<\/span> management <\/span>and<\/span> identified<\/span> a <\/span>challenge<\/span> that<\/span> deserves<\/span> greater<\/span> attention as water <\/span>scarcity<\/span> and<\/span> the<\/span> demand<\/span> for<\/span> advanced<\/span> treatment <\/span>technologies<\/span> increase<\/span>:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“I <\/span>came<\/span> with<\/span> a focus on RO <\/span>concentrate<\/span> management(treatment) (in <\/span>other<\/span> countries<\/span>). But <\/span>came<\/span> with<\/span> a <\/span>realization<\/span> that<\/span> although<\/span> RO treatment<\/span> is a <\/span>much<\/span> used<\/span> watertreatment in <\/span>areas<\/span> where<\/span> there<\/span> is <\/span>already<\/span> water stress. It <\/span>seems<\/span> this<\/span> will<\/span> become<\/span> even more <\/span>and<\/span> more <\/span>the<\/span> preferred<\/span> technology<\/span>, <\/span>where<\/span> more stringent <\/span>norms<\/span> and<\/span> water stress <\/span>will<\/span> only<\/span> become<\/span> more apparent <\/span>with<\/span> climate<\/span> change <\/span>and<\/span> the<\/span> need<\/span> to<\/span> think<\/span> circular<\/span> as well. <\/span>However<\/span> I <\/span>felt<\/span> that<\/span> the<\/span> many<\/span> case studies<\/span> on <\/span>one<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> above<\/span> mentioned<\/span> topics <\/span>paid<\/span> little<\/span> attention <\/span>to<\/span> concentrate<\/span> management. It <\/span>seems<\/span> that<\/span> the<\/span> concentrate<\/span> management is <\/span>an<\/span> unresolved<\/span> challenge<\/span> but <\/span>something<\/span> that<\/span> we <\/span>should<\/span> address<\/span> as <\/span>the<\/span> water sector<\/span><\/span>.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

By combining international inspiration with a strong Dutch network, the initiative helped transform conference attendance into a shared learning journey. The group not only expanded their global perspectives, but also strengthened relationships across the Dutch drinking water sector. Furthermore, ideas were discussed about joining the IWA Young Water Professionals Programme and Regional Chapters.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The conversations do not stop in Glasgow. Participants will share their findings within their own organisations and across the wider Waterwijs network, helping ensure that the insights gathered by the next generation of water professionals contribute to the future development of the Dutch drinking water sector.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
