The research stems from the PhD work of KWR researcher Lydia Tsiami and forms part of the ERC Synergy programme Water Futures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The IWA Project Innovation Awards are presented every two years at the IWA World Water Congress &amp; Exhibition. At the same time, infrastructure investments are costly and are planned over time horizons of 50 years or more. Rather than asking an optimisation algorithm to identify a single \u2018best\u2019 infrastructure plan for an assumed future or a limited set of scenarios, infrastructure planning is formulated as a sequential decision-making problem.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A reinforcement learning agent interacts with models of the water system, experiences many possible future developments and learns how investment decisions should evolve over time. Vitens was already moving towards adaptive planning: a strategy-driven approach rather than a single fixed \u20182050 blueprint\u2019. This <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">10 million ERC Synergy Grant explores how water systems can be designed and managed under deep uncertainty. Each category has one Gold, one Silver and two Bronze winners.
