Water levels in the Rhine and the IJssel are currently lower than normal for this time of year. What does this mean for our drinking water supply? KWR researcher <\/em>Roberta Hofman<\/em><\/a> explained the potential consequences yesterday on <\/em>RTL Ontbijtnieuws<\/em><\/a>. Current events highlight just how important it is to start working now on a future-proof drinking water supply.<\/p>\n

<\/em><\/p>\n

The low river level does not automatically mean that there will be a shortage of drinking water. However, it does highlight the fact that the availability and quality of our water sources cannot be taken for granted. Due to climate change, periods of drought and low river flows may occur more frequently. At the same time, changes in water quality can make drinking water production more complex.<\/p>\n


\nFrom source to reliable drinking water<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hofman\u2019s research includes innovative water treatment, water reuse and the removal of micropollutants. Her research focuses on how we can utilise water sources safely and sustainably, even under changing conditions.<\/p>\n

This is not just about improving purification methods. When traditional sources come under pressure, it is also important to consider water conservation, reuse and alternative sources. Within WiCE, the \u2018Water in the Circular Economy\u2019 research programme<\/a>, work is therefore underway to develop solutions for a future-proof and circular water sector.<\/p>\n

One example is the research into safe water from alternative sources<\/a>, which has investigated the conditions under which sources such as rainwater and greywater can be used responsibly, and for which applications. This generates knowledge not only about the technical possibilities, but also about the preconditions for safety, sustainability and application.<\/p>\n


\nFrom science to practice<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is precisely this link between knowledge and application that characterises KWR. Research begins with scientific questions, but gains value when the results become applicable in practice. That is why KWR works closely with drinking water companies, water authorities, local authorities and other partners to develop concrete solutions.<\/p>\n

The Circular Testing Ground for Water-Conscious Building within WiCE<\/a> is a good example of this. In a practical setting, new concepts are investigated and experiences from various testing grounds are brought together. In this way, the focus is not only on whether a solution works technically, but also on the conditions required to make it safe, sustainable and truly applicable.<\/p>\n

This creates an important cycle: practical questions lead to new research, research yields new insights, and practical experience helps to further develop those insights. Today\u2019s low river levels are therefore more than just a current news item. They underline how important it is to look ahead and develop various solutions in parallel.<\/p>\n
