WarmteStad<\/span> and<\/span> KWR have<\/span> jointly<\/span> completed<\/span> a <\/span>unique<\/span> demonstration<\/span> project. <\/span><\/span>For the first time in the Netherlands, a large solar thermal field and <\/span><\/span><\/span>re<\/span><\/span><\/span>sidual <\/span><\/span><\/span>heat from data <\/span>centres<\/span> have been combined with <\/span><\/span><\/span>su<\/span><\/span><\/span>bsurface <\/span><\/span><\/span>seasonal thermal storage. <\/span><\/span><\/span>WarmteStad<\/span> developed<\/span> the<\/span> heat <\/span>supply<\/span> system, <\/span>while<\/span> KWR <\/span>simultaneously<\/span> developed<\/span> a digital <\/span>twin<\/span>: a digital <\/span>representation<\/span> of <\/span>the<\/span> system <\/span>that<\/span> can<\/span> be<\/span> used<\/span> to<\/span> simulate<\/span> and<\/span> evaluate<\/span> the<\/span> performance of <\/span>its<\/span> various<\/span> components<\/span> and<\/span> assess<\/span> different future <\/span>scenarios<\/span>. <\/span><\/span>During the project, <\/span>WarmteStad<\/span> was able to improve the system\u2019s efficiency, partly <\/span><\/span><\/span>ba<\/span><\/span><\/span>sed on<\/span><\/span><\/span> analyses <\/span><\/span><\/span>with<\/span><\/span><\/span> the digital twin. <\/span><\/span><\/span>The project was co-<\/span>funded<\/span> by<\/span> a <\/span>grant<\/span> from<\/span> the<\/span> Dutch <\/span>Ministry<\/span> of <\/span>Economic<\/span> Affairs<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

From<\/span> 2021 <\/span>to<\/span> 2026, <\/span>WarmteStad<\/span> built <\/span>the<\/span> Zernike heat plant in Groningen <\/span>and<\/span> developed<\/span> a <\/span>multi<\/span>-source <\/span>strategy<\/span> for<\/span> the<\/span> system. <\/span><\/span>Th<\/span><\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span><\/span> distri<\/span>ct heat<\/span>i<\/span>ng netw<\/span>or<\/span>k<\/span><\/span><\/span> of<\/span><\/span><\/span> Warm<\/span>t<\/span>eStad su<\/span>pplies<\/span> h<\/span>e<\/span>at to s<\/span>e<\/span>veral neighbou<\/span>rhoods in Gron<\/span>ing<\/span>e<\/span>n <\/span>a<\/span>nd <\/span>t<\/span>o the univ<\/span>ersity campus<\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/span>T<\/span>he a<\/span>im<\/span> is to <\/span>supply<\/span> heat<\/span> using <\/span><\/span><\/span>re<\/span><\/span><\/span>s<\/span>idual<\/span><\/span><\/span> heat fr<\/span>o<\/span>m d<\/span>ata cen<\/span>tres an<\/span>d solar thermal energy,<\/span> store su<\/span>rplus renewable hea<\/span>t u<\/span>n<\/span>dergro<\/span>und, <\/span>and reduc<\/span>e CO\u2082 <\/span>emis<\/span>s<\/span>ion<\/span>s. <\/span><\/span><\/span>KWR used the project as a<\/span> \u2018living l<\/span>ab\u2019, develo<\/span>ping<\/span> a digital tw<\/span>in i<\/span>n<\/span> parallel wi<\/span>th c<\/span>ons<\/span>truction of the heat plant.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The heat plant was <\/span>commissioned<\/span> at <\/span>the<\/span> end of 2022 <\/span>and<\/span> has <\/span>since<\/span> <\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span><\/span>en <\/span><\/span><\/span>been progress<\/span>ively expa<\/span>nde<\/span>d<\/span> and opti<\/span>mi<\/span>sed. <\/span><\/span><\/span>D<\/span>u<\/span>rin<\/span>g the first<\/span> few <\/span>ye<\/span>ars<\/span>,<\/span> the<\/span> main priority was security of <\/span>heat s<\/span>upply. Buildin<\/span>g on<\/span> this foundat<\/span>ion, addit<\/span>ional as<\/span>sets<\/span> were subsequ<\/span>e<\/span>ntly <\/span>a<\/span>dd<\/span>e<\/span>d to inc<\/span>r<\/span>eas<\/span>e the share of waste <\/span>hea<\/span>t and s<\/span>olar th<\/span>ermal energy as <\/span>heat d<\/span>e<\/span>mand <\/span>gr<\/span>ows. WarmteS<\/span>t<\/span>ad\u2019s <\/span>multi-so<\/span>urce str<\/span>ategy offers a <\/span>high d<\/span>egree of flexibi<\/span>lit<\/span>y<\/span> and fr<\/span>eedo<\/span>m of c<\/span>hoice.<\/span> The <\/span>trade-of<\/span>f is<\/span> that sy<\/span>stem oper<\/span>a<\/span>tio<\/span>n<\/span> can qu<\/span>i<\/span>ckly b<\/span>ecome comp<\/span>lex, pl<\/span>a<\/span>cing conside<\/span>r<\/span>able de<\/span>mands on opera<\/span>tor<\/span>s and sy<\/span>stem devel<\/span>opers.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Digital twin supports optimisation<\/h2>\n

The digital twin was developed through an iterative process involving model development, <\/span>processing<\/span> monitoring data, validation, scenario analysis and evaluation. <\/span>This made it possible to check the completeness of the monitoring data during the development <\/span>, assess the performance of individual assets, and repeatedly review the control approach and operational strategy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The scenarios explored using the digital twin provide insight into how the heat plant could operate up to 2030. <\/span>The results indicate a declining contribution from gas boilers <\/span>and an increasing use of renewable heat. <\/span>The role of seasonal thermal storage was also evaluated as part of the scenario study. <\/span>In <\/span>the situation <\/span>with an increasing\u00a0<\/span>heat demand and <\/span>a gr<\/span>owing <\/span> availability of renewable heat sources<\/span>, seasonal storage helps maximise the use of renewable sources over the course of a year<\/span>,<\/span> while also performing an important longer-term system function. <\/span>As supply and demand grow, seasonal storage can act as a buffer within the multi-source strategy, helping the system absorb fluctuations and uncertainties associated with future growth.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CO\u2082 target expected to be achieved in 2028 or 2029<\/h2>\n

WarmteStad\u2019s multi-source strategy has a target of achieving a cumulative reduction of 15.7 kilotonnes of CO\u2082 emissions during the heat plant\u2019s first five years of operation. According to WarmteStad\u2019s sustainability reports, a total CO\u2082 emissions reduction of 3.1 kilotonnes was achieved between 2023 and 2025. Based on the digital twin results, the target cumulative reduction of 15.7 kilotonnes of CO\u2082 is expected to be reached in 2028 or 2029. This would be within five to six years of the heat plant becoming operational, depending on actual heat demand and growth in the availability of renewable heat sources.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The demonstration project has shown that a multi-source strategy can be used in a district heating network with a growing customer base to progressively increase the use of renewable heat sources, resulting in steadily <\/span>redu<\/span>cing <\/span>emissions<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
