KWR participated in the 47<\/span>th Annual Meeting of the Dutch Society of Toxicology (NVT), held on June\u00a0<\/span>23-24<\/span>, 202<\/span>6<\/span>, at <\/span>Amersfoort<\/span>, Netherlands<\/span>. Our toxicolog<\/span>ists Milou Dingemans<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Sanah Shaikh,<\/span>\u00a0together with\u00a0<\/span>UU\u00a0<\/span>MSc students\u00a0<\/span>Astri\u00a0<\/span>Wulandari and Donna Calis\u00a0<\/span>attended\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>presentations and connected with fellow participants to learn about the latest advances in toxicology and\u00a0<\/span>discuss\u00a0<\/span>their relevance to water quality and drinking water safety<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This year\u2019s conference theme,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span>Toxicology at every scale: from molecules to ecosystems<\/span>,\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0closely\u00a0<\/span>aligns<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with our\u00a0<\/span>commitment<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>translate<\/span>\u00a0toxicological research into practical solutions for water safety.\u00a0<\/span>Keynote sessions highlighted that human biomonitoring (HBM) is increasingly\u00a0<\/span>applied\u00a0<\/span>for assessing real-world chemical exposure, particularly when combined with environmental monitoring and modelling approaches.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Research contributions and scientific exchange<\/h2>\n

Astri presented a poster on the development of an\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in silico<\/span><\/span>\u00a0QSAR (Quantitative Structure\u2013Activity Relationship) model to predict the immunotoxicity of\u00a0<\/span>non<\/span>–<\/span>steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>NSAIDs<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0and their metabolites in aquatic environments.\u00a0<\/span>NSAIDs are widely used and\u00a0<\/span>frequently<\/span>\u00a0detected in the environment<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This research addresses the growing concern of pharmaceutical contamination in water systems<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Donna presented her research on the applicability domains of QSAR models for human toxicity assessment, focusing on how to define the boundaries within which these models can be reliably applied<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for data-poor substances relevant to drinking water safety.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Milou\u00a0<\/span>and Sanah\u00a0<\/span>participated<\/span>\u00a0in interactive workshops<\/span>\u00a0on\u00a0<\/span>science communication\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>computational<\/span>\u00a0toxicological methods<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Milou<\/span>\u00a0also<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>contributed to<\/span>\u00a0session\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>Planet under pressure – challenges and perspective<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0on water pollution<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0with a presentation on\u00a0<\/span>water pollution<\/span>\u00a0and how this can be monitored and managed<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>nd by being part of<\/span>\u00a0the panel\u00a0<\/span>that focused on\u00a0<\/span>collaboration possibilities<\/span>\u00a0and system approaches,<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>the activating role of scientist\u00a0<\/span>for positive impact on the environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Shared insights<\/h2>\n

The meeting attracted a diverse community of professionals, including representatives from\u00a0universities and\u00a0RIVM,\u00a0and other leading\u00a0organisations\u00a0active in toxicology, fostering a dynamic environment for cross-sector dialogue and collaboration.\u00a0Such\u00a0exchanges in both formal sessions and informal networking\u00a0generate\u00a0new insights\u00a0for\u00a0ongoing and\u00a0future water quality research and management.\u00a0Discussions during the conference further\u00a0emphasised\u00a0that understanding chemical risks requires a multi-scale perspective, from molecular\u00a0processes to environmental distribution and human exposure, and that regulatory frameworks must\u00a0be\u00a0continuously\u00a0adapted\u00a0based on real-world evidence.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Takeaways from the conference<\/h2>\n

The broad range of poster topics and inclusive workshops highlighted the wide-reaching relevance of toxicology to public health and environmental safety.\u00a0The\u00a0participation\u00a0of KWR\u00a0affirmed\u00a0our commitment to bridging science and practice, ensuring that our research not only advances scientific understanding but also delivers tangible benefits for safe and sustainable drinking water.\u00a0Overall, the conference underscored the importance of integrating experimental data, modelling approaches, and policy feedback loops to improve chemical risk assessment and water quality management.\u00a0Our participation in\u00a0this network\u00a0also helps us stay connected with toxicology experts from other\u00a0organisations, including those in food safety and public health. These relationships open the door to fresh perspectives, joint efforts on shared challenges, and ongoing learning that strengthens our work\u00a0in the long run.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
