AI was the theme of the conference, so &#8220;AI in water&#8221; was everywhere. More than 30% of the presentations referred to AI, showing that it is gaining substantial traction in demonstrating its potential in digital transformation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Building the foundation for agentic water modelling<\/h2>\n<p>Christos Michalopoulos and Dennis Zanutto from the Hydroinformatics team presented the MCP server. For readers who don&#8217;t live in water modelling, EPANET is a free, open-source software that simulates how water moves through a distribution network. It is powerful and widely used, but its native interface is decades old, and getting value from it programmatically still requires high technical skills, which keeps much of its flexibility locked up with researchers and developers.<\/p>\n<p>The EPANET MCP server changes how you interact with hydraulic models. Think of it as a chatbot for hydraulic modelling: instead of working through code or a legacy user interface, you simply tell the model what you want to do in natural language.<\/p>\n<p>MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that provides a Large Language Model (LLM) with a structured way to call external tools, so the model handles the language and reasoning, while the validated hydraulic engine performs the actual calculations. In practice, that means a practitioner can run a full simulation, modify a network (change valve , add or remove pipes, adjust diameters), and visualise results, simply by chatting with the model, without writing a line of code or navigating a traditional modelling interface.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the LLM-assisted EPANET simulation service is being assessed in an exploratory research project (Verkennend Onderzoek) to evaluate its potential use in drinking water utilities. More specifically, the service&#8217;s reliability will be stress-tested through various test cases, and its potential risks and concerns will be discussed during interviews with hydraulic modellers. The objective is to research its potential for safe use and, more broadly, the democratisation (i.e., lowering barriers) of hydraulic analysis and decision-making.<\/p>\n<h2>Talks that stood out<\/h2>\n<h3>Dynamic Adaptive Policy Pathways<\/h3>\n<p>Dionysios Nikolopoulos from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) presented a methodology built on Dynamic Adaptive Policy Pathways (DAPP). DAPP is a decision-making-under-deep-uncertainty framework: instead of betting on a single prediction of an uncertain future, you design a strategy that adapts over time as conditions change. This method is applied to a case study in East Attica, the most populous region in Greece. The work first identified candidate interventions, with objectives shaped by stakeholder preferences. A multi-objective optimisation then identified not just which actions to take but also their sequence and timing, and accounted for the lead time required to implement each change.<\/p>\n<p>At KWR, we are also working with DAPP, more specifically DAPP-MR. The MR addition stands for &#8216;Multi-Risk&#8217; and is an adaptation of the method that allows for the creation and evaluation of adaptation policy pathways in situations where multiple sectors and exogenous risks (climate change, population growth, economic development, etc.) interact. Beyond the technical and modelling aspects, the project focuses on the processes and requirements that enable drinking water companies to successfully use DAPP-MR.<\/p>\n<h3>MCP server for SWMM<\/h3>\n<p>Meagan Tobias from the University of Michigan presented an MCP server for the agentic use of SWMM, the EPA&#8217;s stormwater model. The core idea is similar to our EPANET work: to lower the barrier for non-experts to run a complex model in natural language. The part we found most interesting was the comparison across different LLM client models: model choice noticeably changed how much effort the user had to put in to get a usable answer, and a cost analysis showed the more expensive models were generally more effective at understanding the task.<\/p>\n<h2>Digital Transformation is everywhere<\/h2>\n<p>Of all the things discussed at the conference, one theme stood out: digital transformation. Given the current pace of AI, the consensus was that this is finally within reach for the water sector. A lot of the work on show was genuinely trying to bridge AI and water, but some of it seemed to be there mainly to follow the trend, with little substance beneath the surface.<\/p>\n<p>That matters because water is an unforgiving sector, where public health matters most and reliability and risk management are key. Strict regulation and standardised procedures are not obstacles to transformation; they are the conditions that make a trustworthy transformation possible. This aligns closely with the ambitions we have in the Hydroinformatics knowledge domain at KWR: .<\/p>\n<p>Together with the Dutch water utilities, we co-create the foundations for a reliable digital future.
