How do we move circular industrial water use from promising concepts to practical, trusted and widely implemented solutions? This was the central question explored during KWR’s interactive workshop, \u201cWater Efficiency in Industry: Practical Pathways to Circular Industrial Water Use,\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em> held<\/span><\/span> as part of the<\/span><\/span><\/span> Water in Industry (WIN2026) Conference in Delft<\/span><\/span>, which took plac<\/span><\/span><\/span>e from<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a028 June to 3 July 2026.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Moderated by Johann Poinapen, the session <\/span>showcased<\/span> lessons from the <\/span><\/span>AquaSPICE<\/span> EU <\/span>project<\/span><\/span><\/strong> and introduced the <\/span><\/span>Water Efficiency Framework<\/span><\/span><\/strong>:<\/span><\/span><\/span> a structured <\/span>methodology<\/span> that helps industries <\/span>identify<\/span>, <\/span>evaluate<\/span> and implement opportunities for water efficiency, <\/span>reuse<\/span> and circularity. Contributions from Shell, Yara, TU Delft and KWR highlighted that while many technologies are already available, successful implementation depends on much more than technical feasibility.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The panel discussion focused on practical barriers to implementation, including governance, regulation, business cases, operational confidence and collaboration between industries, water utilities, technology <\/span>providers<\/span> and regulators. Speakers also explored the growing importance of <\/span><\/span>urban-industrial water symbiosis<\/span><\/span>, where municipalities and industries work together to create shared, circular water solutions.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To conclude the workshop, participants were asked:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

”In one word, where should the biggest effort be placed to accelerate progress towards circular water use in industry?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The answer that <\/span>emerged<\/span> most strongly was <\/span><\/span>collaboration<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

In addition to <\/span>organising<\/span> the workshop, KWR had a strong presence throughout WIN2026, with oral presentations delivered by <\/span>Julian Mu\u00f1oz Sierra, Ruben van den <\/span>Berg<\/span> and Johann Poinapen. Together, these contributions <\/span>showcased<\/span> KWR\u2019s<\/span> applied research and innovation in industrial water, <\/span>resource recovery<\/span>, water <\/span>efficiency<\/span> and circular water management.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The workshop <\/span>demonstrated<\/span> that while innovation and technology remain essential, the transition towards circular industrial water systems <\/span>ultimately depends<\/span> on trust, shared <\/span>ambition<\/span> and <\/span><\/span>strong partnerships<\/span><\/span><\/span>. KWR looks forward to continuing to work with partners across T<\/span><\/span>he Netherlands and Europe to translate research into practical solutions that strengthen water security, <\/span><\/span>improve <\/span><\/span><\/span>operational <\/span>resilience<\/span> and <\/span>support the transition towards <\/span><\/span>a <\/span><\/span><\/span>circular and <\/span>climate-neutral<\/span> water <\/span>sector<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
