Under the slogan \u2018Evides Future-Proof\u2019, the participants were given a tour of the highlights from the research. That involved following the journey taken by water: from the source, via treatment and the mains, through to possible recycling and a return to the source.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The afternoon was expertly chaired by Splinter Chabot, and it began with a word of welcome and an interview with Bart Combee, the director of Evides. He emphasised that, as a water utility, Evides is facing complex challenges and major investment decisions. Integrated, long-term and programme-based research helps organisations make the right decisions to stay future-proof.<\/p>\n<p>The programme consisted of three thematic sessions focusing on sources, treatment and distribution. In each session, researchers from Evides presented research findings and their application in practice. In addition, a panel discussed each topic. The panel consisted of Rona Vink, Drinking Water Production technology and sources manager, David Moed, Process and Technology Manager at Evides Industrial Water, Christian Kivit, mains network strategist at Evides Infra, and Marielle van der Zouwen, who discussed the broader context on behalf of KWR and the drinking water utilities\u2019 collective research programme.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 1800px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kwrwater.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/evidents-event-toekomstproof.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photography: Rogier Bos<\/p><\/div>\n<p>During the \u2018sources\u2019 session, the focus was on how to use multiple and more diverse sources. Industrial effluent is also being considered as a source of water for industry, and ways of improving effluent quality further are being explored. A range of technologies have been developed and tested for, among other things, pre-treatment and the recovery of raw materials. The aim here was to produce full-scale designs with cost estimates. In addition to Evides\u2019 own research programme, the European Horizon project AquaSpice was also mentioned here.<\/p>\n<p>After a short break, the programme continued with the treatment session. The major challenges relating to emerging substances and PFAS were discussed, as were the treatments required to address those challenges. In addition, research is taking place to safeguard the biological stability of the mains network, particularly in the context of the warming of the urban environment. This session ended impressively with a presentation showing how this research formed the basis for the design of a new treatment approach for the Wranghe\/Baanhoek location.<\/p>\n<p>The final session focused on distribution. During the session, participants engaged with the challenges involved in managing both Evides\u2019 raw water pipelines and its mains network. For the management and maintenance of those systems, it is also becoming increasingly important to coordinate effectively with other parties in the sector such as mains operators. Research has taken place into how the work can be done in a more data-driven and risk-based way. The highlight was the presentation of BestNet: a tool that combines a range of calculation and simulation models for the mains network to generate replacement scenarios. In practice, BestNet is used to decide how to optimise maintenance scheduling.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, there was a discussion of the years to come and new research plans. Marielle van der Zouwen emphasised the value of the programmatic approach to the Evides research, as well as the importance of locating it in a regional, national and international context, and of continuing to learn from one another.
