For water, 2025 was a year of significant strategic developments, both at KWR and beyond. The 2025 Annual Review describes those developments in brief, looking ahead to visions and plans that address the social challenges related to water.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In her foreword, Mari\u00eblle van der Zouwen, the KWR CEO, identifies some of the strategic highlights from 2025. Van der Zouwen believes that the European Water Resilience Strategy, the new European Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, the Draft Spatial Planning Document and the Wennink Report are: \u201cA major boost for our work at KWR and in the entire Waterkwartier\u201d.<\/p>\n

Bringing the values of water to life<\/h2>\n

The KWR 2035 master plan also saw the light of day in 2025 under the title: \u201cBringing the values of water to life\u201d. The top priority in the strategy that emerges in this plan is to safeguard adequate supplies of qualitatively healthy and safe water in Europe. Van der Zouwen: \u201cWe are focusing not only on drinking water but also on other water and other elements of water supplies, such as surface and wastewater, drought and water buffers \u2013 which are of great importance for our shareholders and customers\u201d.<\/p>\n

Varied picture<\/h2>\n

The 2025 Annual Review presents a varied picture of ways in which KWR has responded to issues facing the water sector over the past year. There is an overview of projects we worked on last year, a top-ten of topics that attracted attention<\/a>, press moments<\/a>, award-winning publications and other awards<\/a> which we hope will provide relevant knowledge for everyone who cares about water.<\/p>\n

Research in the spotlights<\/h2>\n

The Annual Review 2025 also turns the spotlights on a number of research areas that provide concrete illustrations of our wide-ranging field of activities. We take stock of last year\u2019s PFAS research<\/a> \u2013 an issue of increasing concern to the water sector. And of course, the KWR Waterwijs and WiCE<\/a> programmes are featured. And we are particularly proud of the hexamonitor<\/a>, which was completed in 2025 after years of preparation. This test array \u2013 which is located in the Waternet test Hall \u2013 will investigate the effects of climate change and the energy transition on, for example, the growth of opportunistic pathogens in drinking water mains, and therefore on the biological safety of our drinking water.<\/p>\n
