In 2025, KWR researchers regularly appeared in the media to comment on current and socially relevant water-related issues. From drinking water safety and the impact of misinformation to emerging substances such as PFAS, their insights contribute to interpretation, public debate, and decision-making. The examples below illustrate how KWR experts use their knowledge to make complex topics accessible to a broad audience, thereby contributing to a better-informed society.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Boil<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>water advisories in the Utrecht region<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

Since the morning of 1 November 2025, 125,000 households in the Utrecht region have <\/span>been required<\/span>\u00a0to boil their drinking water because it may be contaminated with bacteria. This advisory creates various challenges for schools, offices, and other workplaces. What does this situation reveal about the vulnerability of our drinking water system? Roberta Hofman-Caris addressed this question on the NOS radio program<\/span>a <\/span>Met het Oog op Morgen<\/span><\/i>\u00a0[2 november 2025]<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The battle against TikTok influencer<\/span><\/span>s<\/h4>\n

On NOS Nieuws [14 september 2025] <\/a>, Roberta Hofman uses clear and direct language to firmly refute videos by influencers on social media (TikTok and YouTube). \u201cWe have excellent drinking water in the\u00a0<\/span>Netherlands,<\/span>\u00a0I believe the best in the world. The claims in these influencer videos<\/span>\u2014\u2018<\/span>buy a water filter or your baby will get sick\u2019\u2014are truly misleading.\u201d<\/span> Misinformation on social media prompted drinking water companies to launch the\u00a0<\/span>\u2018G<\/span>aan met die Kraan\u2019<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>\u2018Turn on the tap\u2019<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0campaign<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

PFAS in rainwater<\/h4>\n

KWR\u00a0is conducting research, commissioned by the Province of Utrecht, into PFAS concentrations in rainwater. For this purpose, a rain gauge has been installed on our premises to collect rainwater. The amount of PFAS in the sample is <\/span>determined<\/span>\u00a0in KWR\u2019s chemical laboratory. Arnaut van Loon discussed this on regional television<\/span> <\/span>RTV Utrecht [24 november 2025]<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Wastewater-based epidemiology<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

Showing courage and boldness\u2014these are the qualities that drug researcher Thomas ter Laak attributes to municipal authorities when they ask KWR to <\/span>monitor<\/span>\u00a0wastewater continuously (24\/7) for a week for residues of consumed drugs and,\u00a0<\/span>not infrequently<\/span>, drug waste. The public results of the wastewater studies conducted by KWR over the past 15 years have consistently had policy implications. In 2025, the Municipality of Dordrecht, among others, commissioned such a study, and the results were released in November. \u201cDordrecht not a drug\u00a0<\/span>Wa<\/span>lhalla<\/span>, but usage comparable to larger cities,\u201d reported<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>AD [20 november 2025]<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AI in the water sector<\/h4>\n

\u201cWe learn every day,\u201d says Siddharth Seshan, Portfolio\u00a0<\/span>Manager<\/span>\u00a0Digital Water. \u201cThe sector is searching for the right applications, but also for trust in its use. We approach AI from our water\u00a0<\/span>expertise<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>We are not an AI company; we are a water research institute.<\/span>\u00a0For us, AI is a tool to better understand and\u00a0<\/span>optimize<\/span>\u00a0water processes. Consider\u00a0<\/span>predicting water demand and identifying<\/span>\u00a0and classifying microplastics in water samples.\u201d<\/span> <\/span>[H2O Actueel,\u00a08 juli 2025]<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Cleaning up PFAS<\/h4>\n

<\/b>KWR researcher Johan van Leeuwen is also the scientific coordinator of the PFAS Living Lab at Utrecht University. His\u00a0<\/span>expertise<\/span>\u00a0lies in the remediation of PFAS-contaminated soil. He\u00a0<\/span>anticipates<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>high costs<\/span>\u00a0for cleaning up PFAS contamination at\u00a0<\/span>Eerste<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Lelystadse<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Schroothandel<\/span>\u00a0(E.L.S.). \u201cUnlike the situation in\u00a0<\/span>Doetinchem<\/span>, it may be necessary at E.L.S. to remove surrounding buildings in order to fully remediate the PFAS.\u201d According to Van Leeuwen, such sites should be remediated as quickly as possible: \u201cI would like to see E.L.S. placed on a priority list for remediation\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[Follow the Money,\u00a015 december 2025]<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
