With a global warming potential 273 times greater than CO\u2082, N\u2082O \u2014 colloquially known as \u201claughing gas\u201d \u2014 poses a serious challenge for wastewater utilities striving for climate neutrality.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559740&quot;:255}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Workshop \u201cTaming the Laughing Gas\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The 90-minute workshop at <a href=\"https:\/\/nordiwa.no\/\">NORDIWA<\/a> brought together utilities, researchers, policymakers, and technology providers to explore full-scale strategies for monitoring, modelling, and mitigating N\u2082O emissions \u2014 and to envision a future in which climate-neutral wastewater treatment is standard practice.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559740&quot;:255}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Opening the session, Johann Poinapen (KWR) emphasised the urgency of addressing N\u2082O emissions: <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201c<em>Our sector has made significant progress in improving effluent quality. However, N\u2082O remains the \u2018sleeping giant\u2019 of wastewater emissions.
