KWR\u2019s recent work on chemical water quality and health has been featured in the April 2025 <\/span>issue of <\/span>The Source<\/span>,<\/span><\/span> magazine<\/span> of the International Water Association (IWA)<\/span>.<\/span> The journal has over 8000 <\/span>members in 140 countries<\/span>. <\/span>Th<\/span>is<\/span> article, authored by <\/span>Sanah Majid Shaikh<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> Daniel Duarte<\/span>,<\/span> Tessa Pronk<\/span>,<\/span> Milou Dingemans<\/span>,<\/span> and colleagues from <\/span>partner institutions (<\/span>HWL, <\/span>Waternet<\/span>, <\/span>Vitens, Utrecht University, and RIVM<\/span>)<\/span> was developed as part of the <\/span>Waterwijs<\/span> collective research <\/span>programme<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Despite increasing scientific evidence, immunotoxicity is rarely included in regulatory water safety assessments<\/span>. <\/span>In the article Immunotoxicity: The Hidden Health Risk<\/em>, <\/span>the authors explore the <\/span>often-overlooked<\/span> but vital <\/span>need to incorporate<\/span> immunotoxicity in drinking water safety assessments<\/span> as <\/span>an important step<\/span> toward protecting public health in the face of emerging chemical risks<\/span> and complex exposure to mixtures<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Why <\/span>immunotoxicity<\/span> m<\/span>atters<\/span>?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Immunotoxicity refers to harmful effects on the immune system caused by exposure to certain chemicals. Substances like <\/span>PFAS<\/span> (<\/span>p<\/span>er- and <\/span>p<\/span>olyfluoroalkyl <\/span>s<\/span>ubstances<\/span>) <\/span>often found in industrial runoff<\/span> and <\/span>BPA (<\/span>b<\/span>isphenol<\/span>)<\/span>, used in plastics, have been linked to reduced vaccine effectiveness, increased infection rates<\/span> and even higher cancer risks.<\/span>
\nWhat makes immunotoxicity especially concerning is its subtle, cumulative nature. <\/span>Unlike immediate toxic effects, immune system damage <\/span>builds up<\/span> silently over time, often <\/span>remaining<\/span> undetected until it leads to serious or irreversible health outcomes. This is particularly alarming during critical stages of development like childhood or pregnancy, when even low-level exposure can have lifelong consequences.<\/span> Yet, despite the mounting evidence, immunotoxicity is still not a standard endpoint in chemical safety evaluations. Regulatory frameworks like the <\/span>EU\u2019s REACH mandate<\/span><\/a> testing for carcinogenicity<\/span> and several other endpoints<\/span>, but immunotoxicity is only addressed when specific <\/span>concerns are raised<\/span>,<\/span> leaving countless chemicals unexamined for their potential immune harm. This <\/span>is a <\/span>regulatory blind spot <\/span>of<\/span> public health <\/span>concern<\/span> that demands immediate and systematic <\/span>action<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What is <\/span>required<\/span>?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

To address the gap in water safety, a tiered testing strategy<\/span> is recommended<\/span>, starting with broad bioassays and narrowing down to high-risk chemicals. The<\/span> authors<\/span> urge the establishment of effect-based thresholds<\/span> (EBTs) to guide decisions, <\/span>prioritisation<\/span> of under-tested substances, development of <\/span>standardised<\/span> immunotoxicity tests, and continued research on how chemical mixtures <\/span>impact<\/span> the immune system<\/span>.<\/p>\n
