My research explores how we can <\/span>improve collaboration<\/span><\/b> in tackling sustainability and water challenges. The way we work together significantly influences the solutions we develop and implement. I hope my work contributes to creating better tools, skills, and capacities to effectively work together and co-create relevant knowledge that leads to action on sustainability. My research uses <\/span>machine learning to design water distribution networks<\/span><\/b> that can adapt to changing conditions. Traditional approaches struggle with future uncertainties, such as climate change, urban growth, and shifting topologies. As part of the <\/span>ERC Synergy Grant Water Futures<\/span><\/i><\/a> project, my work aims to develop <\/span>intelligent decision-making frameworks<\/span><\/b> that help stakeholders make socially acceptable and fair choices <\/span>for managing water infrastructures in the cities of the future<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My work focuses on <\/span>justice and ethics<\/span><\/b> in the water sector. Beyond technical solutions, we must reflect on what kind of world we want to live in. In the project <\/span>Justice as a Pillar for the Water Sector<\/span><\/i><\/a>, we explore how <\/span>justice can shape the water transition<\/span><\/b>. How can we ensure that the decisions made in this transition are not only technically sound but also\u00a0ethically justifiable? Thinking and writing about this<\/span> topic is incredibly energising because it is both educational and of societal importance<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, working in science means bringing researchers together to solve issues by generating new knowledge. You meet people with different backgrounds and perspectives, and I find it especially inspiring to work with early career researchers, who bring fresh eyes and new skills.\u201d \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

A <\/span>healthy water environment<\/span><\/b> requires cutting-edge research on <\/span>next-generation, animal-free risk assessment<\/span><\/b>. Through projects like PARC (Partnership for the Assessment of Risks from Chemicals<\/a>)<\/em><\/span>, we improve the risk assessments and sustainability of chemicals. The <\/span>PARC<\/span><\/i> initiative strengthens the scientific foundation for evaluating chemical risks, ensuring safer and more responsible decision-making in the future. <\/span>Read more on Milou her work<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My research focuses on improving our understanding of <\/span>chemical water quality<\/span><\/b>. One way we do this is by identifying <\/span>clusters of pollution<\/span><\/b> in surface water, <\/span>deriving conclusions on whether the concentrations are rising or\u00a0receding<\/span>. Our recent study, <\/span>Linking Clusters of Micropollutants in Surface Water to Emission Sources, Environmental Conditions, and Substance Properties<\/span><\/i><\/a>, sheds light on this important issue.<\/span><\/p>\n
