In a recent article published in <em>Policy Studies<\/em>, KWR researchers present an innovative approach for intergenerational redesign. This method brings young professionals and experienced experts together in order to work jointly on the development of new designs for infrastructure systems. KWR has successfully applied this approach in the GRROW project, in which young professionals were involved in thinking about the future of the Dutch water system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW175205907 BCX8\" lang=\"NL-NL\" xml:lang=\"NL-NL\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW175205907 BCX8\">In the article <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/library.kwrwater.nl\/publication\/72077543\/reimagining-public-water-an-intergenerational-exploration-of-paradigms-for-future-system-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun SCXW175205907 BCX8\" lang=\"NL-NL\" xml:lang=\"NL-NL\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart SpellingErrorV2Themed CommentHighlightPipeRest CommentHighlightRest SCXW175205907 BCX8\">Reimagining<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightRest SCXW175205907 BCX8\"> public water: <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed CommentHighlightRest SCXW175205907 BCX8\">an<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed CommentHighlightRest SCXW175205907 BCX8\">intergenerational<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed CommentHighlightRest SCXW175205907 BCX8\">exploration<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightRest SCXW175205907 BCX8\"> of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed CommentHighlightRest SCXW175205907 BCX8\">paradigms<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed CommentHighlightRest SCXW175205907 BCX8\">for<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed CommentHighlightRest SCXW175205907 BCX8\">future<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightRest SCXW175205907 BCX8\"> system design<\/span><\/span><\/a>, the authors describe three steps for this redesign process: 1) a descriptive step; 2) a normative step; and 3) an exploratory step. By first identifying the design principles for the current drinking water chain (descriptive step) and then reconsidering and reformulating them (normative step), it is possible to imagine different futures for the drinking water chain (exploratory step). The authors use the <em>Advocacy Coalition Framework<\/em> (ACF) to elaborate these steps. This is a theoretical model that helps to establish a picture of the shared values and beliefs \u2013 the paradigms \u2013 of groups of actors. The method developed by the authors describes, reconsiders and explores possible alternative paradigms. In this way, the method constitutes an important building block for <em>Public design<\/em>, an approach in which design thinking is used to achieve transitions.<\/p>\n<h2>New visions of the water system<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW143369574 BCX8\" lang=\"NL-NL\" xml:lang=\"NL-NL\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW143369574 BCX8\">KWR used intergenerational rethinking in the GRROW project<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW143369574 BCX8\" lang=\"NL-NL\" xml:lang=\"NL-NL\" data-contrast=\"auto\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kwrwater.nl\/en\/projecten\/grrow-generational-and-radical-rethinking-of-the-water-sector\/\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart CommentHighlightPipeRest CommentHighlightRest SCXW143369574 BCX8\">GRROW-project<\/span><\/a><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentHighlightPipeRest SCXW143369574 BCX8\">. which involved more than fifty young professionals in a design process. The result was three new visions of the Dutch water chain that represent new paradigms. Through workshops and intergenerational dialogues (conversations between young professionals and experienced colleagues), GRROW explored possible future paradigms for the drinking water chain, providing a fresh view of system design for the future.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Inspiration for other sectors<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW232746146 BCX8\" lang=\"NL-NL\" xml:lang=\"NL-NL\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW232746146 BCX8\">The GRROW project is a<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW232746146 BCX8\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kwrwater.nl\/samenwerkingen\/waterwijs-verkennend-onderzoek\/\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart CommentHighlightPipeRest CommentHighlightRest SCXW232746146 BCX8\">Exploratory study<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0in the Waterwijs programme. It demonstrates that the intergenerational rethinking approach not only results in creative solutions but also gives young professionals a voice in strategic discussions.
