{"id":75705,"date":"2024-07-18T16:45:05","date_gmt":"2024-07-18T14:45:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kwrwater.nl\/actueel\/water-futures-shines-at-wdsa-ccwi-2024-in-ferrara\/"},"modified":"2024-07-18T17:15:17","modified_gmt":"2024-07-18T15:15:17","slug":"water-futures-shines-at-wdsa-ccwi-2024-in-ferrara","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kwrwater.nl\/en\/actueel\/water-futures-shines-at-wdsa-ccwi-2024-in-ferrara\/","title":{"rendered":"Water-Futures Shines at WDSA\/CCWI 2024 in Ferrara"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post_intro\">\n<p>KWR and the Water-Futures team had a strong presence<span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (with 15 people from KWR and 10 from Dutch<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> water utilities)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in this year\u2019s WDSA\/CCWI 2024 conference, held in Ferrara, Italy, from July 1 to 4. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Through a series of presentations and our participation in the Battle of Water Demand Forecasting, we<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and our partners (from <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">KIOS<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">CoE<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Bielefeld University and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">U<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">EB)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> had the chance to share our latest work and progress in the context of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kwrwater.nl\/en\/projecten\/water-futures\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Water-F<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">utures<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> project, an ERC Synergy Grant project that aims to develop a theoretical and practical basis for designing the urban drinking water systems of the future. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Presentations from the Water-Futures Team<\/h2>\n<p>The Water-Futures team presented work addressing various challenges within urban drinking water systems, including future scenario generation, adaptive design, operational flexibility, and water quality.<span style=\"font-size: 16px;\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On the second day of the conference, Christos kicked off the morning session on &#8220;Design, Analysis, and Modeling of Water Distribution Systems&#8221; with a review of scenario-based approaches in water systems design and stressed the importance of considering deep uncertainty in the design of water networks. Following him, Lydia presented her work on utilizing reinforcement learning for the lifecycle design of water distribution networks and showed how this methodology performs compared to heuristic algorithms. His research peaked the audience\u2019s interest and was voted by the attendees as the best presentation among young presenters at the event.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This marks the second consecutive year that KWR and Water-Futures have won such an award, following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kwrwater.nl\/en\/actueel\/de-promovendi-bij-kwr-werken-aan-innovatieve-watertechnologieen-voor-een-duurzame-toekomst\/?highlight=tsiami\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lydia\u2019s recognition<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for Best Student Paper\/Presentation at last year\u2019s CCWI in Leicester, UK.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"post_intro\">\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 1296px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kwrwater.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/6-Konstantinos-GLynis-award.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1296\" height=\"972\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Konstantinos Glynis receiving the Best Young Presentation Award. The Water-Futures team, a collaborative effort among all partners of <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW82322078 BCX8\">the ERC Synergy Grant<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW82322078 BCX8\"> project, secured an impressive second place out of 31 teams<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW82322078 BCX8\">!<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW82322078 BCX8\"> The results were presented by <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW82322078 BCX8\">Prof. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW82322078 BCX8\">Stefano <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW82322078 BCX8\">Alvisi<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW82322078 BCX8\">, and during the presentation, Elad Salomons humorously explored how ChatGPT might perform in such a competition (spoiler: not very well!). <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW82322078 BCX8\">This achievement underscores the strength of our collaborative research and innovative approaches.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"post_intro\">\n<div class=\"post_intro\">\n<div class=\"post_intro\">\n<div class=\"post_intro\">\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 2560px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kwrwater.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/7_Battle-Results-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The rankings of the Battle of Water Demand Forecasting, with the Water Futures team on the second place of the podium<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Other WDSA\/CCWI Highlights<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">KWR\u2019s impact at the conference extended beyond the research conducted within the Water-Futures project with KWR colleagues giving presentations on various topics.
