Innovation is not easy in a fragmented water sector. That was one of the conclusions atthe third annual EIP Water conference<\/a>, which was held on this occasion in Leeuwarden. But innovation is clearly necessary to deal with the effects of climate change and of the growth of cities. The European Innovation Partnership (EIP) on Water \u2013 the goal of which is to accelerate the uptake of innovation by end-users \u2013 is therefore strongly committed to collaboration. KWR participated in the EIP conference as the leader of two EIP Action Groups.<\/p>\n

The dimensions that water problems have already reached was made clear in the presentation by Alex Nickson of the Greater London Authority. In 2012, the Olympic Games came close to running out of water. Moreover, thousands of residents of the metropolis are subject to overflowing toilets when it rains heavily. How to innovate, then? Innovation economist Mariana Mazzucato advocated a stronger role for government. Not only in the early, risky stage of the research, but also in the process of the development of a product and its introduction to the market. Many Apple innovations came about on the basis of government subsidies. The touchscreens on smartphones were partly developed through CIA funding.<\/p>\n

\n

Water management and resource reuse Action Groups\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Investor Reinhard H\u00fcbner called for more collaboration, particularly with local partners. As a start-up, on your own, you won\u2019t make it. Collaboration with such parties is precisely what EIP Water aims at through its Action Groups. KWR leads Action Groups in the field of urban water management (City Blueprint<\/a>) \u2013 about which Stef Koop (KWR) made a presentation \u2013 and of the recovery and reuse of resources from the water cycle (ARREAU<\/a>). On the day prior to the conference, ARREAU organised a workshop in which the most recent developments in Europe were presented. One of the conclusions was that phosphorus recovery and upscaling into fertiliser is beginning to take shape at more and more locations.<\/p>\n

Water reuse side event<\/p>\n

Another side event of the EIP conference was the Water Reuse meeting, in which Paul Jeffrey (Cranfield University) and Jos Frijns (KWR) participated representing the European\u00a0DEMOWARE<\/a>\u00a0research project. Among the subjects addressed was the European guideline aimed at supporting water reuse \u2013 to which DEMOWARE has provided input \u2013 and the technical innovations and opportunities of water reuse. The conference concluded with the \u2018Leeuwarden Declaration<\/a>\u2019, in which water occupies a prominent position in the circular economy. This theme also plays a big role in\u00a0KWR\u2019s research programme<\/a>.<\/p>\n
