Safe and clean drinking water is a valuable asset and as an internationally-renowned research institute, KWR undertakes applied scientific research in relation to the water cycle which contributes towards this. Bridging science to practice is our mission. We have 180 staff in three knowledge groups working on innovative projects in the Netherlands and, increasingly, in Europe. Our shareholders are the ten Dutch water companies and one Flemish water company.
The Water Infrastructure team carries out research projects into the quality and quantity of drinking water and pipe materials. Applying new knowledge and new tools, we help water companies make smart, sustainable investments in their pipelines, with a view to permanent access to high-quality tap water. The team consists of 15 specialists of extremely wide-ranging backgrounds and experience. The team is currently seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative, market-driven team leader and researcher.
In your team leader role you will be leading a team of 15 professionals (researchers). You will be the collaborative supervisor who facilitates and coaches the team. You will create team spirit and an environment of communication and confidence. You will also be a driver of new national and international initiatives and be responsible for a well-functioning team whose members are able to exploit their talents to the full. You will achieve this in a stimulating research environment, having regard for people, resources and funding.
As a researcher you will be working with clients, for the most part water companies, on the continuing development of knowledge and tools to keep the Dutch pipe network in top shape. This will involve carrying out applied scientific research projects. You will translate client queries into new research, coordinate the activities of others and contribute expertise yourself. You will identify opportunities in the market and form part of a national and international network. You will enjoy the challenge of putting your work on the international map.
For both the team leader role and the position of researcher you will:
- be a university graduate in a relevant discipline, such as (civil) engineering or other exact science;
- have experience in a national and/or international research environment or in a business setting where you will have managed highly qualified staff;
- have excellent command of written and spoken Dutch and English.
We consider it important that as a team leader you bring the following competences to the role:
- team leadership
- coaching and development of staff
- organisational sensitivity
- focus on results
As a researcher you will be an enthusiastic, client-focused expert in one or more aspects of drinking water distribution. You will be familiar with the challenges facing water companies and be well aware and have experience of or affinity with the use of hydroinformatics and smart water management in tackling them. You will also see opportunities to apply our knowledge in developments in society, such as the energy transition and the rollout of heat grids. You will be able to communicate effectively and persuasively about challenges, research and solutions, at different levels. You will also have a minimum of five years’ experience working in the water or energy sectors (water company, water board, energy company or engineering firm) or similar.
