Marcel Paalman is an experienced adviser on water systems and a specialist in water quality and freshwater purification. He has a PhD in geochemistry. His role at KWR is mainly connecting research and practice. Marcel has a broad network and is good at thinking along with clients and developing new innovative concepts and translating those to practice-based research. For example, he worked on projects to store rainwater deep underground, after which this freshwater can be used in dry periods as crop water for the greenhouse farming industry. These projects resulted in concrete practical pilot(s) and showcases generating worldwide interest. The concept of subsurface water storage has the potential to make a structural contribution to a solid freshwater supply in delta regions. It also offers possibilities for the city to limit flooding problems.
