Han Runhaar works as a senior ecohydrologist on the link between water management and nature. He did his PhD on the dehydration of nature in the Netherlands. Han did extensive research on the link between water balance and vegetation. He applied this knowledge in the various forecast models and in knowledge systems indicating which hydrological conditions are necessary for the types of plants and vegetation occurring in the Netherlands. Examples are the ‘Nature terrestrial’ component from the Set of Instruments for Drought developed by STOWA and the ‘Hydrological Preconditions: Nature’ created in collaboration with Alterra. He did a lot of research for the national and province governments into necessary actions for recovery in Natura 2000 protection areas. Han is a member of the OBN expert team on Stream Valleys and in that context, works on integral stream valley recovery projects.
