Afnan Suleiman is molecular microbiologist within the team of Microbial Water Quality and Health. Afnan has experience on soil microbial ecology and has performed her PhD research on soil science. During her PhD in Brazil (Federal University of Santa Maria-UFSM) in collaboration with Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO), she focused on the impact of Agricultural organic residues on the bacterial community using molecular biology techniques. During her post- doc at the NIOO in collaboration with Wageningen University, she studied the interactions of rhizosphere microorganisms playing important roles in soil food web (bacteria, fungi, protozoa and metazoans). Besides, she developed research evaluating the impact of microalgae collected from wastewater systems as fertilizer on soil microbial communities and greenhouse gases emissions. At KWR, Afnan would like to apply her expertise on soil and plant-(root zone) microbiomes to address challenging questions on the microbiology of the soil-water interface, and use her knowledge on molecular biology techniques to support the development of best practices for aquatic microbiome research.
