Digital map provides interactive visualisation of groundwater quality

Commissioned by the Groundwater Quality Monitoring Network Managers’ Platform, KWR has developed a digital map that provides an interactive visualisation of water quality in the Netherlands.

With the map, a Geographic Information System (GIS), the monitoring results for various general and anthropogenic compounds in groundwater can be visualised interactively. The user can zoom in on the map, and display monitoring data for different years or depths next to each other. There is also the possibility of filtering observations by risk locations, so that only those made at Water Framework Directive (WFD) locations are shown. The map presents information on the monitoring campaigns of 2016/2017 and 2018/2019.

The GIS comprises the following elements:

  • Inorganic compounds
  • Threshold value compounds
  • Top 10 pesticides
  • Top 10 compounds
  • Total maps

For KWR Water Research Institute the map offers a means of translating research into the diffusion and impact of groundwater pollution to water practice. It is an innovative and user-friendly tool for the communication of a great number of groundwater quality parameters. Compared to ‘flat’ map atlases, the users can easily navigate through the viewer and select the configurations themselves. The map thus provides decision-support information about groundwater quality for policy-advisors, managers and citizens.

The digital map is already available on KWR’s site.
