Aa and Maas Water Board, BWA and KWR sign partnership agreement on finescreen technology

On 3 March 2015, the Aa and Maas Water Board, technology company BWA and KWR signed an agreement to collaborate in the EU-financed Screencap project. The project is directed at the implementation of finescreen technology at the Aarle-Rixtel wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Screencap is also the reference for the commercialisation of this technology.

Increasing treatment capacity and reusing fibres

The installation removes sieved material, consisting of cellulose fibres originating mainly from toilet paper, from the wastewater at the beginning of the treatment process. This increases the treatment capacity and produces a cellulose residual stream that can potentially be used in the production, for instance, of insulation material, bioplastics and biofuels. The new installation will be put into operation in mid-2016, and cellulose will be removed from one of the two identical treatment paths. Then, the extensive monitoring programme will begin. KWR, as project coordinator, together with its partners, will be comparing the differences in the treatment parameters of the two treatment paths.
