Worldwide collaboration

KWR has an extensive international network of universities and research institutes within which it works for both Dutch and international clients. These collaborations open up international expertise for the benefit of the water sector in the Netherlands, and bring together the most advanced knowledge resources for the solution of trans-national water questions.

Global Water Research Coalition (GWRC)
KWR is one of the co-initiators the GWRC. This coalition involves 14 leading research institutes in the area of drinking water and wastewater from Australia, South Africa, the US, Singapore and five European countries. Since its establishment in 2002, the GWRC has developed into a well-oiled research platform. Its members respond quickly to current water issues, jointly developing research strategies for global water problems, and collaborating in conducting the research. The GWRC also provides the participants access to international expertise and funding. This collaboration not only produces greater research efficiency but more broadly shared perspectives.

AwwaRF
KWR works bilaterally with AwwaRF, the US-based, international, non-profit, research institution and funder. We consult every year on each other’s research programmes and engage in joint projects, focussing on subjects like biofouling of RO/NF membranes, UV disinfection and Early Warning Systems.

TECHNEAU
TECHNEAU is a European research programme, which is coordinated by KWR. It involves the participation of 30 business-sector and scientific organisations from a variety of countries. The programme has a budget of € 19 million for the 2006-2011 period, most of which is funded by the European Commission. TECHNEAU develops new technologies for the production and monitoring of drinking water, but also works on the optimisation of existing technologies. Risk management and consumer behaviour are objects of its research as well, and part of the programme is dedicated to the Millennium Development Goals. The consortium also collaborates with a large number of water companies in Europe and elsewhere. The programme is closely coordinated with that of the BTO, the Joint Research Programme of the Dutch Water Sector (with its Flemish, Aruban and Antillian water company associates).
